Climate impact & resilience

OUR MISSION

Climate action is an integral part of our mission to improve outcomes for patients, healthcare providers, and researchers around the world, and it is our responsibility to intensify our actions to further reduce our emissions.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

42%

We set a goal to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 42% by 2030*

25%

We set a goal to reduce our Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030**

2050

We are committed to achieve net zero by 2050

13%

We reduced Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 13% in 2023 vs 2022.

PROGRAMS

Our road to net zero

We take the view that every ton counts and, to achieve our goals, we have focused our operational strategy around three pillars.
CARBON REDUCTION

Cutting greenhouse gas releases from our facilities

Our key levers for reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions are to deploy energy efficiency measures and reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions. Efficiency projects implemented in prior years to replace and optimize equipment resulted in reductions achieved in 2023.
OUR FLEET

Reducing emissions from our fleet

We have a global fleet of over 12,000 vehicles. The largest proportion of these are for our service engineers to carry tools and parts for installation and servicing of hospital equipment. In 2021, we started the process of transitioning vehicles in North America and Europe to electric and hybrid vehicles. We are also exploring other efficiency options to try and reduce the environmental footprint of our fleet, such as servicing equipment remotely. Through 2023 we continued to optimize our vehicle use and extend our transition to electric vehicles as availability of suitable vehicles and recharging infrastructure makes it a viable option. Altogether, we now have over 460 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in our fleet.
RENEWABLE ENERGY

Shifting to renewable energy sources

Our carbon reduction strategy includes transitioning to renewable energy sources, and we are increasing our purchase of renewable energy. In 2023, we increased our use of renewable energy to 21% from 13% in 2022 through a mix of onsite generation, purchase of green retail energy, and Renewable Energy Certificates, where appropriate.
