Health tech start-up uses AI to redefine cardiology care

Today, the number of practicing cardiologists is not keeping pace with the growing demand for cardiovascular care¹. And, every year, the need for electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis grows by five to twelve percent². Reading ECGs is an iterative process that consumes huge amounts of time that could be better spent with patients.

Idoven is a pioneering health tech company that uses deeply validated artificial intelligence to make things easier for cardiologists and do what humans alone cannot – quickly and accurately interpret extremely large numbers of ECGs.

“Our goal is to create value for patients, the patient’s family, doctors, providers, the entire healthcare ecosystem,” said Dr. Manuel Marina Breysse, cardiologist, co-founder and CEO of Idoven. “We’re using artificial intelligence and machine learning to deliver faster, more accurate diagnostics.”

During a recent Cardiology Coffee Break, Dr. Marina Breysse shared details about how Idoven helps clinicians and patients. He also explained how the company is using the power of collaboration to amplify the impact of innovation. Register for the on-demand coffee break to get the full picture.

Increasing capacity and accuracy by supporting clinicians

With the time and expertise of cardiologists at a premium, Idoven’s AI-powered platform supports doctors with substantial improvements to the speed, consistency, and accuracy of ECG interpretation and prediction. Patients receive a faster, more accurate diagnosis, and they can then be treated more precisely.

What’s behind this innovation?  Idoven’s team of data scientists, engineers and cardiologists leverage a proprietary deep learning system applied to cardiology. The result is a solution that enhances a clinician’s ability to identify, triage and diagnose patients at scale.

“Our vision is to transform the way cardiovascular diseases are identified by augmenting the physician’s decision making through integration of AI algorithms into the everyday clinical workflow,” said Dr. Breysse.

Based on science and validated by research

The AI software that powers Idoven’s solution has been learning cardiology for years from more than 49,000 patients and 1.25 million ECG hours. The AI models are trained on one of the most diverse and longest ECG databases, with data from both healthy and diagnosed patients.

Idoven’s technology makes it easier to effectively use the large volumes of data generated by long-term and continuous monitoring devices. Because the AI software is device neutral, data can come from ECGs, wearables, patches, holters, implantables, and more. The algorithms can help facilitate an accurate, timely diagnosis that would traditionally require much longer data review times.

New research is validating the benefits of this AI technology. For example, a recent study published in The Cardiovascular Digital Health Journal analyzed the accuracy of Idoven’s AI with Abbott’s insertable cardiac monitors. The study found a 95.4% increase in arrythmia detection and a 98.0% reduction in false positives.³

Using a collaborative ecosystem model

Technological advances that are unknown or unused cannot lead to digital transformation. Today, with an onslaught of new technologies and treatment options, healthcare providers need a reliable way to learn about promising innovations and how to best use them in their daily practice.

That’s why GE HealthCare’s Edison™ Accelerator is working to build an ecosystem of healthcare providers, industry players and start-ups to develop, integrate and commercialize digital solutions. The program helps clinicians integrate impactful innovations into their workflows.

Idoven has been a member of this transformative program since 2022. Dr. Marina Breyesse explains, “Every week, new treatments, new hardware, or new software is available. For care providers to stay up-to-date and make this transition quickly, the ecosystem needs front-end solutions like this that allow them to work smoothly. They don’t have time to learn how to work with a new tool every two weeks.”

Joining forces with legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper and World Cup champion

Celebrated as a soccer icon and named the best goalkeeper in the world five times by the IFFHS, Iker Casillas boasts an illustrious career with Real Madrid and as a World Cup champion. After experiencing a life-altering heart attack during training in 2019, Casillas turned his focus towards a meaningful cause.

He joined forces with Idoven, to early detection of cardiovascular diseases through the use of innovative technology. Together with his foundation, Casillas and Idoven work to raise awareness about the importance of cardiovascular health, promote preventative measures, and improve the diagnostic process for the most vulnerable groups, including children with Down Syndrome and patients with congenital heart diseases or at high risk of sudden cardiac death. Their shared mission is to save lives by ensuring that people worldwide have access to accurate, timely, and efficient detection and intervention for heart-related conditions.

Continuing to transform healthcare with digital technology.

AI-powered cardiology can help cardiologists in their day-to-day work by enhancing their ability to interpret large volumes of ECG data quickly and accurately. Idoven is driving innovation and enhancing patient care in multiple areas beyond ECG interpretation. Their solution can also predict potential cardiovascular diseases, help monitor cardiac drug safety, and enable comprehensive preventative screening programs.

“We are excited to be at the very forefront of this movement in cardiovascular care to help doctors and patients all over the world,” said Dr. Marina Breysse.
