Optimizing the MR imaging workflow and the patient experience

People strive for excellence every day. Whether they are still in school or out in the workforce, people often try their hardest to have their work seen as excellent. As a customer or employee, people appreciate excellence from others as well. So, the question becomes how do we achieve excellence. Well, Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, has a few ideas of how best to achieve excellence for their patients.1 They believe that scheduling, protocol standardization, clinical excellence and patient experience all play a role in creating the best healthcare environment.

Aiming for efficiency

The goal of Hospital Kirchburg has been to modernize and enhance the quality of care for residents of Luxembourg. Since their four locations perform about 200,000 imaging exams per year, one of the logical steps is to seek out improvements for their radiology department, which include scanners of all types.1 The facilities have three MR scanners. Just one of these scanners performs roughly 6,900 exams per year.1

Because the magnetic resonance department is so important to the facility, it can be expected that the staff would look to the radiology department for leadership toward better care.1 The facilities' goals for their improvements is to unlock clinical value and operational efficiency within their department. To do this, they use analytics from both dynamic and comprehensive dashboards that provide key acquisition and analytic measures for the radiology staff. Meanwhile, the department managers and staff uses tools to better understand the data to make decision to enact clinical and operational improvements. Combined with the staff's expertise, the department can leverage this data to optimize their workflow using machine data and understand key performance indicators.

Paolo Sana, the radiology manager for all of the facilities, uses this information to help evaluate the impact of operational and clinical improvements.1 Changes to the department's workflow and processes are completed using a step-by-step process. The goal of this gradual change is to create stable and sustainable change, while evaluatng the impact of their operational and clinical improvements. As a result of the changes implemented the hospital has been able to adjust their scheduling, processes, and scanning.
