Gas Exchange: A simple measurement with multiple clinical benefits

Pulmonary gas exchange measurement (indirect calorimetry) allows continuous and non-invasive measurement of oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2), plus calculation of respiratory quotient (RQ) and energy expenditure (EE). The gas exchange measurement is used with modular monitors in anesthesia and critical care areas.

This Quick Guide from GE Healthcare explains how gas exchange measurement is accomplished and outlines the clinical value for:

  • Detecting changes in patients; metabolic status
  • Performing nutritional assessment to help avoid under- or over-nutrition
  • Supporting treatment decisions
  • Supporting the weaning process

Today’s technology enables easy, continuous gas exchange measurement. Bedside modules enable fast set-up with no pre-calibration. Modular design allows hemodynamic and respiratory parameters to display on a single screen, allowing fast and easy detection of changes.
