Radiation dose guidelines and quality initiatives are constantly evolving. It's mandatory to keep exposure to ionizing radiation "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA principle) to avoid, for instance, unnecessary exposure or overexposure to ionizing radiation. However, dose management can be inefficient, lack consistency, or be incomplete and this impacts clinicians' ability to identify the right information (such as exams at risk, outliers and trends) to make the right decisions.
“The Joint Commission is increasingly focusing on radiation dose reduction and comprehensive CT Technologist training using the “Image Gently & Wisely” guidelines.
Clinical Manager at UHS Imaging Department
“We have 8 different hospitals along with several clinics that are trying to implement a unified dose management program. Many of the stakeholders had never been engaged with one another and we had not established common processes.”
Lead/Diagnostic Imaging Manager, Aspirus Health, USA
“People knew that the more radiation used in a CT, the better the diagnostic picture. When the radiation dose was analyzed, we realized we were doing more CTs and that our doses could be lower when diagnosing specific problems.”
