Turning disruption into resilience: How VitaScan rebuilt MRI services with upgradable technology

Turning disruption into resilience

When severe flooding hit Nysa, Poland, in 2024, the local hospital lost access to critical MRI services overnight. For some patients, that meant delayed diagnoses for conditions ranging from neurological disorders to cancer. For affected providers, it meant the need to make urgent decisions under pressure.

VitaScan Diagnostic Center, which has delivered MRI services to the hospital for more than a decade, suddenly faced the challenge of rebuilding from the ground up. But instead of simply replacing what was lost, they made a decision that reflects a broader shift happening across healthcare technology—one that balances urgency with long-term sustainability.

From crisis to opportunity

Instead of pursuing a traditional replacement pathway, VitaScan chose a GoldSeal™ reconditioned SIGNA™ Voyager MRI system from GE HealthCare.

The decision came down to speed and confidence. GoldSeal systems are reconditioned and certified to meet original performance specifications, with manufacturer-backed warranty and updated software. That made it possible to bring MRI services back online faster than waiting for a new system, without sacrificing quality or capability.

“We needed reliability we could trust, and we needed it fast,” Malgorzata Delimat, president of the VitaScan Diagnostic Center in Poland, explains. “The solution allowed us to get back to serving patients when our community needed it most.”

Performance that meets today’s needs

While speed was primary to the immediate needs of VitaScan, the center also needed advanced imaging capabilities to help maintain clinical quality and patient trust.

With advanced software such as AI-enabled reconstruction (AIR™ Recon DL), the new system helped VitaScan improve workflow and patient experience. “One of the biggest advantages is that it shortens the patient waiting list, thanks to significantly reduced examination times,” stated Delimat.

The rapid installation of the GoldSeal SIGNA Voyager helped allow the center to not only get back to serving patients with confidence, but also to enhance the level of the service provided.

Built to adapt over time

Beyond immediate recovery, VitaScan also considered how their investment would hold up in the years ahead.

GE HealthCare’s MRI systems, including SIGNA Voyager, are designed with upgrade pathways that allow healthcare providers to access new software capabilities and select hardware enhancements over time. Rather than replacing an entire system, clinicians can evolve their technology in step with evolving needs.

For providers operating under increasing financial and operational pressure, that flexibility can help extend the useful life of equipment while maintaining access to innovation.

A practical approach to sustainability

VitaScan’s decision also reflects a broader shift in how healthcare providers think about equipment lifecycle. As healthcare systems are under increasing pressure to do more with fewer resources, resource-intensive imaging equipment like MRI systems presents a meaningful opportunity for healthcare systems to maximize the impact of their equipment.

With a lifespan of more than 30 years, MRI magnets can remain in service for decades. Extending their use through reconditioning and upgrades can help to reduce material use and waste.

Reconditioned systems offer the potential for lower capital expenditure compared to full replacements, and they maintain access to the most up-to-date technological capabilities, while also helping to reduce environmental impact.

Support across the lifecycle

For healthcare providers, the value of an imaging system continues to evolve over years of use, shaped by performance, reliability and the ability to adapt to changing clinical needs. GE HealthCare’s Services organization supported VitaScan through installation, system optimization, and ongoing performance management.

From predictive maintenance to remote support and upgrade planning, these services are designed to keep systems operating reliably as demands evolve. This lifecycle approach is closely tied to circularity. Working alongside providers to help optimize performance and plan for future capabilities, these services help enable providers to focus on patient care while maintaining operational continuity.

What comes next

VitaScan’s experience highlights a growing trend across healthcare: the move toward solutions that are not only high-performing, but also adaptable and resource-conscious.

GE HealthCare is building a model where some advanced medical equipment can be continuously renewed rather than replaced — supporting both operational resilience and sustainable healthcare delivery. Upgradable MRI systems represent a practical step in that direction. They help allow providers to respond quickly in times of need while building a sustainable path forward. In moments of disruption, that combination can make a substantial difference.
