Cancer remains one of the United Kingdom’s most pressing health challenges with more than 403,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
Behind every statistic is an individual patient with unique needs that require equally personalized care. As diagnoses and treatments become increasingly precise, they demand more than technology. They require the seamless integration of advanced imaging with treatment planning to ensure every care decision is tailored to the individual patient.
GenesisCare UK is one of the UK’s leading private cancer care providers, specializing in the treatment of complex cancers and transforming patient care with advanced diagnostics, medical oncology and radiotherapy. GenesisCare also provides theranostics, a precision medicine approach combining diagnostic imaging with targeted therapy using radiopharmaceuticals. Theranostics is a significant advancement toward personalized patient care, utilizing a radioisotope to image target tumors, followed by a matching therapeutic isotope to destroy the tumor and minimize damage to healthy tissue.
As a private oncology provider in the UK, the organization takes an integrated approach to cancer care, with a philosophy of treating the whole patient, not just their cancer. GenesisCare currently runs 14 outpatient cancer centers and recently introduced a center in Surrey that offers the latest advancements in cancer care.
“Our purpose-built oncology center in Surrey treats patients throughout the southeast of England who have specific disease conditions because we are able to deliver innovative radiotherapy using both theranostics and advanced radiotherapy treatment platforms,” says Audrey O’Brien, Head of Marketing for GenesisCare UK.* “We reassure patients that they are in the care of leading oncology specialists and have access to the latest innovative treatments to support the best possible outcomes.”
For oncology teams, imaging is only one part of the process. The ability to connect diagnostic information with treatment planning can help clinicians evaluate disease, collaborate across specialties and manage patient care more efficiently.
High-resolution and high-sensitivity molecular imaging are key to enabling better patient outcomes at the GenesisCare center in Surrey. To deliver this kind of precision, the center is equipped with an Omni Legend 16cm PET/CT and NM/CT 860, enabling clinicians to reach new levels of sensitivity and detectability for incredibly clear images. The Omni Legend PET/CT also helps streamline imaging workflows. Its AI-based Auto Positioning feature generates a 3D model of the patient’s body to make positioning more consistent and reduce variability across exams, while its touchscreen allows technologists to make adjustments without leaving the patient’s side. The device also includes an automated respiratory feature that is completely device-less, simplifying set-up and improving patient comfort.
To support treatment planning and preparation, the team also uses MIM Encore™ and MIM Maestro™. MIM Encore handles imaging processing within a single solution and provides automated workflows for molecular imaging, from image reconstruction through reporting. MIM Maestro helps streamline radiation oncology plan preparation through standardized processes and contouring tools, including MIM Contour ProtégéAI+™, an AI-enabled auto-contouring solution. These applications work together seamlessly across the GenesisCare network, onsite and remotely, so teams can collaborate easily to plan and manage patient care from different locations.
“MIM software provides mature, well-developed image reporting and radiotherapy planning solutions that have been consistently improved over many years,” says Matthew Walker, PhD, Interim Head of Medical Physics.* “We also benefit from MIM solutions since they can work across our whole network of centers. It is a highly reliable platform, which helps prevent treatment delays.”
These technologies can support clinical decision-making for the team at GenesisCare, including Professor Vineet Prakash, FRCP, FRCR, Dual Consultant in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. The high-quality images from Omni Legend provides Professor Prakash with greater confidence in reviewing studies through MIM software, reducing uncertainty around whether a lesion is clinically significant or a false positive. This added diagnostic confidence also helps streamline presenting findings to multidisciplinary teams and tumor boards.
“I’m more confident in my diagnosis. I’m not giving unequivocal or indeterminate findings,” explains Professor Prakash.* “For our patients, this confidence can save them time because it potentially reduces the need for unnecessary further investigations and imaging.”
Together, Omni Legend and MIM software help clinicians at GenesisCare bring molecular imaging and treatment planning information into a more connected workflow. Radiotherapy scans from the Omni Legend are transferred into the MIM platform for a seamless and efficient process. This integrated approach can support evaluation of disease extent, inform treatment planning and help teams assess response over time as they consider whether to continue or adapt a patient’s care plan.
As cancer care becomes more personalized, healthcare systems are looking for ways to connect the information that guides each step of the patient treatment journey. Bringing imaging, treatment planning and clinical collaboration together in a more connected workflow can help teams work more efficiently, support multidisciplinary decision-making and provide greater continuity across the care pathway.
For patients, that means their care team has a more complete view of the information needed to plan and manage their care. This can help support a more coordinated, personalized experience during an already complex and emotional journey.
