A Quantum Leap in Angio and Neuro Interventional Procedures

Three-dimensional reconstructions are widely recognized as invaluable tools for evaluating CT and MRI images. Now this technology has been extended to the vascular x-ray suite, creating new avenues for planning interventional procedures and surgery. This helps the physician determine both the optimal course of patient therapy and proper implementation of the chosen course of action.

GE Vascular Imaging System

Adwantage Workstation

With more than 70 sites installed worldwide, GE Healthcare Systems is the clear leader in this new technology. The key to this technique's success is being able to perform a single contrast injection during a 200-degree rotational acquisition and then to reconstruct the data in 3D vascular models.

This is precisely what the GE vascular imaging system can do by combining the geometry of the LC gantry with the GE Advantage Workstation and its leading-edge post-processing software. Today this new technique can be applied to a variety of clinical cases.

Without the need for operator intervention, the system transmits image data from a 200-degree, programmed subtracted-spin acquisition to the Advantage Workstation. Here, the data are rapidly reconstructed and displayed as 3D images. In fact, the software reconstructs the entire vascular tree so quickly (less than 2 minutes, including the transfer time of the data from the vascular system to the Advantage Workstation) that this capability can be applied during an interventional procedure.

With the help of easy-to-use processing tools, the 3D images can then be viewed at virtually any angle, including those that are impossible to achieve on an x-ray system. The data can be displayed using Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP), Surface, and Volume Rendering. Accurate measurements can also be performed.

Even more exciting, 3D Navigator software can be applied to quickly create real-time, "fly-through" demonstrations of difficult-to-visualize vascular structures. It is also possible to send back to the positioner the gantry angles required to get the same view in 2D than the 3D image displayed.

Advanced Vessel Analysis (AVA) software

The Advanced Vessel Analysis (AVA) software allows the measure and quantification of complex stenoses directly from the 3D model. Thus allowing assesment of lesions on tortuous vessels impossible before from the 2D images.

*The quality of images presented on the World Wide Web varies greatly depending on the computer system, monitor, and web browser used to visualize the images. For that reason, GE does not recommend that you use the images as shown here to judge the system image quality. Write to GE to receive hard copy images for this purpose.

For the interventionalist, the Coils and Clips software, allowing to reconstruct separately the interventional devices and to paste them back into the 3D model offers a invaluable tool to validate treatments efficiency.

Capabilities such as these make the 3D Reconstruction Angiography a tool of tremendous value to angiographers and vascular surgeons, as well as the patients they serve.
