Course 4: Case Scenario Emphasizes Fetal Acid-Base Status reviews FHR pattern definitions and pathophysiology with emphasis on the relationship between FHR patterns and fetal acid-base status. This course presents a series of questions, followed by detailed feedback, explanation and references. Medical illustration and animation provide additional information for key concepts.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Cite the definitions for Acidemia, Acidosis, Hypoxemia, Hypoxia and Asphyxia.
  • Differentiate metabolic acidosis and respiratory acidosis
  • Describe the clinical significance of FHR variability
  • List the possible effects of metabolic acidosis on FHR patterns
  • Identify an organized plan of management for intrapartum fetal resussitation
  • Define normal umbilical artery blood pH and gas values

A 10 question post-test is designed to document the participant’s knowledge of standardized fetal heart rate terminology and pattern recognition related to the case scenario.
