Dr. Ahrens is a noted authority in critical care, specializing in the clinical areas of hemodynamic monitoring and oxygenation. He is a practicing clinical nurse specialist with over 25 years experience. Dr. Ahrens is an exceptional clinical researcher and speaker, whose work emphasizes cost control strategies for critical care, survival prediction during cardiopulmonary arrest, appropriate use of critical care technology and the value of advanced practice nurses. He has recently been appointed the Executive Editor of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses' National Critical Care Program. As a respected author, his book, Hemodynamic Waveform Analysis is considered by many to be the finest clinical guide to the topic. His book, Essentials of Oxygenation was selected as an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year. He is the primary author of over 40 scientific publications. He serves on several editorial boards and is a National Institutes of Health grant reviewer. Dr. Ahrens is recipient of the 1999 Society of Critical Care Medicine Presidential Citation Award and the 1999 American Association of Critical Care Nurses research award for work on ICU sedation management.
