How safe is your MRI Security Zone?
You know only too well that your MR system’s powerful magnetic force can create hazards if the wrong materials invade the Security Zone – the magnet room itself. In fact, any ferromagnetic object can become a dangerous projectile in the magnet room. And any contraindicated biomedical implant can also pose concerns for your patients.

Eliminating Ferromagnetic Items from the Security Zone:
-
Keep the door to the magnet room closed.
-
Limit and monitor access to the magnet room.
-
Supervise non-MR personnel when working in the magnet room or the vicinity of the magnet room.
-
Test all items for ferromagnetic properties before taking them into the magnet room.
-
Remove ferrous items from the immediate vicinity of the magnet room to reduce the chance that someone might carry them into the magnet room.
-
Replace ferrous items that must remain in the vicinity of the magnet room with non-ferrous versions whenever possible.
-
Tag ferrous items that remain at the facility so that everyone knows the item cannot be taken into the magnet room.
-
Do a pocket check before entering the magnet room.
-
When working in the magnet room, do not stand between the door and the magnet or turn your back to the door, keep the door in sight at all times.
-
When working in the magnet room, do not turn your back on the patient or anyone else in the magnet room.
