A New Era of Predictive Imaging Solutions for the Drugs of the Future

Drs. Thakur and Lentle, respectively Presidents of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and of the RSNA, have recently defined Molecular Imaging as follows:

"Molecular Imaging is a technique which directly or indirectly monitors and records the spatiotemporal distribution of molecular and cellular processes for biochemical, biologic, diagnostic or therapeutic applications."

J. Nucl. Med. 2005: 46:11N-13N

The merger of GE Medical Systems and Amersham plc creating GE Healthcare was inspired in part by our desire to make Molecular Imaging a “reality”: we have a unique combination of skills ranging from basic life sciences and proteonomics to chemistry and engineering. We have physicists, biologists, radiochemists, engineers and physicians working together on Molecular Imaging from all over the world.

At GE Healthcare, we are developing new “in vivo” markers and the sophisticated equipments and processes needed to produce them. We want to lead the informatics of detecting the signals and handling the information, thus making possible evaluation of the status of a disease and on its management.

To make these new medical breakthroughs a reality, GE Healthcare is taking a collaborative approach that applies advanced molecular imaging technologies to pre-clinical and clinical in vivo and in vitro validation of new therapies. With access to our isotope production, chemistry, informatics and services such as IMANET – our Imaging Network translating validated biomarkers into high specificity and non-invasive diagnostics, researchers may be able to cut the cost and time of developing new drugs and may bring them to the public more quickly.

GE Healthcare has the technology, biology, chemistry and pharmaceutical development that must be combined to give this new specificity to imaging and treatment decision. We believe that Molecular Imaging will help the future practice of medicine and patient healthcare, and GE Healthcare is leading the way with real investment and real results!
