Faculty Background

Dr. Seltzer is the Director of the PET/CT program at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. His extensive experience in PET and PET/CT imaging includes 6 years as Assistant Professor of Nuclear Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine prior to his faculty appointment in the Department of Radiology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in 2004. At both UCLA and Dartmouth, Dr. Seltzer helped design and implement a highly successful training program for radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians requiring formal coursework in PET applications and formal supervision of PET scan interpretations. He has served as medical director for several regional mobile PET services and has provided comprehensive consultation services for radiologists seeking a second opinion on challenging PET cases. He has given invited lectures regionally and nationally concerning the applications of PET imaging in oncology, cardiology, and neurology and has published papers and book chapters related to PET applications, impact of PET on cancer management, and pitfalls of PET scan interpretation. Dr. Seltzer's preceptorship is uniquely designed to provide an intensive, hands-on, and fully supervised experience for radiologists looking to hone their skills in PET/CT scan interpretation.

Course Overview

This three-day preceptorship is designed to provide practicing radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians with an intensive, hands-on experience in reading PET/CT. The course is geared to physicians who have already completed some formal course work on PET and/or PET/CT but have only gained a limited experience reading scans in their daily clinical practice. The attendee will interpret in a frontline fashion over 150 PET/CT scans covering all clinical applications including those in oncology, neurology and cardiology. Through participation in multiple scan interpretation sessions, each concluding with a detailed review of the key findings, the attendee will develop a higher level of expertise and confidence in interpreting PET/CT. While the vast majority of teaching will be at the workstation, didactic lectures will be given to reinforce the pertinent elements of scan interpretation and to highlight pitfalls, artifacts, acquisition protocols and uncommon clinical indications. A certificate indicating the number of supervised PET/CT interpretations will be awarded upon completion of the course.

Specific Learning Objectives

Upon completing this preceptorship, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the clinical applications of PET/CT in oncology, neurology, and cardiology.
  • Describe the basic principles of acquiring and interpreting PET/CT.
  • Recognize pitfalls and artifacts on PET/CT.
  • Understand how to use PET/CT for monitoring therapy and for radiation therapy planning.

Comments from Previous Participants

"Although I had attended 3 PET/CT courses to prepare myself for reading PET/CT, only this course has truly prepared me for daily interpretation of PET/CT studies. Dr. Seltzer could not be replaced. His outstanding fund of knowledge of both nuclear medicine and CT, his affable nature, his obvious joy in educating physicians, and his lengthy experience in the field make him a truly unique teacher and make this the most helpful, practical course I've attended".

"This course was excellent in all respects. Dr. Seltzer's common sense approach and effective communication skills were key. There are not many courses that are this intense which leave you wanting more at the end. After this course I am not intimidated by PET/CT and I feel ready to start reading."

"Teaching at the workstation was an exceptionally effective way to teach and have good retention."

"Fantastic course. Dr. Seltzer presented lecture material and then applied material to case reviews - EXCELLENT!"

"This is the single best educational event I have ever attended. Thanks so much to Dr. Seltzer for his time, effort, and boundless energy."
