Using the Visual Guide

This guide provides radiologists with a variety of virtual colon exams selected to hone their interpretation skills. Thirty didactic case studies on CD are read using GE's AdvantageCTC™ colon software package. The case interpretation may be noted on a Case Study Form and then compared to the Case Answer Key, which includes details such as the surgical report, endoscopy report and histopathology report. Color supine and prone images and teaching points enhance the learning experience.

Education – The key to Success for Virtual Colonoscopy

"There is emerging consensus that one of the most important factors affecting the diagnostic performance of CT colonography is the training and experience of the radiologist interpreting the examinations. One expects a variable learning curve associated with interpretation of CT colonography exams, where performance improves as the number of cases interpreted increases. Hands-on reading using exclusively cases with optical colonoscopy proof offers the fastest method to improve reader performance."
Jorge A. Soto, M.D.,
Associate Professor of Radiology,
Head of Abdominal Imaging Section,
Boston University Medical Center

"I am a very strong supporter of educating radiologists to learn how to interpret virtual colonoscopy. After having taught many intensive virtual colonoscopy workshops, I have seen firsthand how focused training in this technique has enabled radiologists to accurately detect polyps and cancers. Direct hands-on workstation training evaluating the types of cases that may be encountered in the real-life situation is an easy and logical way to learn. As you learn how to interpret these examinations, you will develop search patterns that are specific for virtual colonoscopy."
Judy Yee, M.D.,
Vice Chair of Radiology,
The University of California San Francisco Chief of Radiology,
San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center

"My experience in teaching virtual colonoscopy courses, and personally participating in both training and testing for multicenter trials, has convinced me that high sensitivity for significant sized polyps is possible, but only if the radiologist is committed to properly train for this specialized task. Studying a gallery of cases and reading 20, preferably up to 50 proven cases, with a proper spectrum of findings and pitfalls, is necessary. A high sensitivity is achievable in a busy clinical practice with the proper guidance and training."
Abraham H. Dachman, M.D., F.A.C.R.
Professor of Radiology,
The University of Chicago
