Professor James E. Rothman

Chief Scientific Advisor, GE Healthcare Senior Advisor for Biomedical Research, GE Global Research

Professor Rothman was named Chief Scientific Advisor in 2003. During his 30-year career, Professor Rothman has taught at a number of prestigious universities, and his research has made considerable contributions to science and industry.

Prior to joining GE Healthcare, Professor Rothman held Professorships at Stanford (1978-1988) and Princeton (1988-1991) universities. In 1991, he founded the Cellular Biochemistry and Biophysics Department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and was Vice-Chairman of Sloan-Kettering in New York City (1991-2004).

In 1995, James joined Amersham PLC to serve as a member of its Science Advisory Board. In 2003, he was appointed to Chief Science Advisor.

The following year, he joined Columbia University as Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, and founded its Center for Chemical Biology.

Professor Rothman’s pioneering research in cell biology has been recognized by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1993). He has also received numerous international awards, including the Lasker Award in 2002.
