Confronted with the need for $6.5 million to finance a GE PACS system, the not-for-profit Scottsdale Healthcare in Scottsdale, AZ, asked GE Healthcare Financial Services for advice on the most advantageous plan for obtaining that financing, according to Randy Luster, CFO.
“GE laid out all our alternatives for us, and tailored a plan to meet our needs. We settled on tax-exempt bond financing to minimize cost, along with off-balance-sheet operating lease treatment to preserve our future borrowing ability,” Luster said. “We explored alternative financing options with other providers, including a statewide tax-exempt pool, but discovered that that choice wasn’t flexible enough to meet our needs.”
Luster liked the low costs associated with GE’s recommendation, but was initially concerned about the complexity and time delays typically associated with structuring a tax-exempt bond issue. However, “GE handled the entire project very expeditiously, with no hitches or loose ends,“ he noted. “That meant I could limit my time involvement simply to decision-making, and freed me to work on other projects. We were very pleased with the whole transaction.”
