Worldwide Impact of Cancer

FACTS
  • Cancer affects an estimated 10 million people worldwide. This figure includes incidence, prevalence and mortality.
  • More than 4.4 million cancer cases are reported from Asia, including 2.5 million cases from Eastern Asia, which has the highest rate of incidence in the world. By comparison, Europe reports 2.8 million cases, North America has 1.4 million cases, and Africa has 627,000 cases.
  • Lung cancer is more prevalent in developed countries (646,000 cases) than in less?developed countries (593,000 cases), and is less prevalent among women (337,000 reported cases worldwide) than in men (900,000 cases). Eastern Asia, with 416,000 reported cases, has the highest rate of incidence in the world. The number of cases of lung cancer throughout all of Europe (375,000) is almost double that for North America (201,000).
  • North America leads the world in melanoma incidence with 44,000 reported cases, of whom 24,000 are men.
  • Colon cancer affects 945,000 people worldwide. Again, Eastern Asia leads the world with 236,000 reported cases, while North America accounts for almost 165,000 reported cases, equally split between men and women. Incidence of colon cancer is almost 50% more prevalent in developed countries (611,000 reported cases) than in the developing world (334,000 cases).
  • Oral cancer affects 267,000 people around the world. It is twice as prevalent in less?developed countries (182,000 reported cases) then in developed countries (84,000 cases). The majority (170,000) of cases are reported in men; Eastern European men account for 43,000 of the reported cases.
  • More than 62,000 people worldwide have hodgkin's disease; 24,000 of those cases occur in women. The majority of cases (35,000) are in less-developed countries, compared to 27,000 cases in developed countries.
