The following section briefly summarizes HCS's participation in several benchmarking and advisory projects:
- We assisted a 14-hospital regional healthcare system on the West Coast with opportunities assessment and action planning. The overall goal of this project was to implement changes that would result in the reduction of total operating expenses by approximately $100 million. We conducted extensive skills training workshops for all middle managers and provided on-site facilitation assistance during an intensive 90-day action planning program. Both labor and non-labor costs were addressed. The overall improvement goal was achieved.
- Two New York facilities recently feeling the impact of deregulation and the rapid increase in managed care developed action plans to allow them to remain competitive and viable in the marketplace. We proved the benchmarking infrastructure, trained managers in action planning and managed the action planning process.
- Assistance and expertise was provided to a Midwest-based hospital with a long history of profitability that is -- for the first time in its history -- facing the reality of operating at a loss. By conducting an in-depth opportunities assessment, We determined where and how to implement the necessary changes and set this hospital once again on the path towards solvency.
- A rural New England hospital and a rural Michigan hospital engaged us to assist their managers in developing cost reduction strategies based on solid benchmarking information. We provided manager training and on-site action planning consultation. Both labor and non-labor costs were addressed.
- We are currently providing service to one of the largest fully integrated delivery systems. The project consists of a detailed benchmark based opportunities assessment utilizing both comparative data and on-site fact finding as the basis for recommendations.
- We were selected by a large New York City hospital to conduct an in-depth operational review of their surgical services. This project is currently underway.
- We recently completed a rapid cost reduction planning and implementation program for three hospitals in central California. The project included manager training and facilitated action planning.
- We are currently completing a rapid cost reduction program for two northern California hospitals and one coastal facility.
- We are currently completing a materials cost reduction program for a Texas facility.
