HOW CUSTOMERS CAN WIN...

Excerpts of interview with Dr. Jagdish M Modhe,
Consultant Radiologists, P D Hinduja National Hospital
& Medical Research centre, Mumbai

"We use CT/i, Advantx LCA,logiq 500,senographe DMR,gamma camera, TX-3 DF DSA(X-ray) and stenoscop 9000.To suport the imagingequipment, we employ twoDICOM networks, the CT andDSA, both networked withAdvantage windows. The networks have provedextermely beneficia, having reduced operating costs. Alongwith increased throughput, thereis faster delivry of report and most important of all, they havehelped in treatment planningand increased patient satisfaction. They have also helped in the simultaneousreview of DSA& CT and CT Angio. Large multi specialityhospitals, with around 300 bedswould substantially benefit from these network.

Having successfully used the above system, we would like toobtain the HISand RIS systems as part of our future plans.

We are extremelye happy withthe networks and the rest of the products and services thatconnect us to GE, I woulddefinitely recommend GE toother doctors.

* We provide storage capabilities and supportfor all DICOMS storage classes to enable date acceptance from any DICOM cocmpatibility device.
* We also support full DICOM query/retrievecapabilitis. Regardless of whoever stored data access for anyone.
* We support DICOM interface to information systems, with an HL7 interface to out PACS system that provides connectivity to our information systems like RIS and HIS.

The new initiative called IHE (Integrated Healthcareenterprise) ensures bettern connetivity betwen PACS andinformation systems. Rather than develop its own standard, the IHE Committee will suggest improvements to theDICOM standard and the HL7 standards. In fact,GE co-chairs this committee.

How do GE's approach and offerings in IIS differ from those of competition?
We were the first in the market with an across-the-boardwindows NTtm based workstation offering. We have been quick in recognising that customers are looking for standards, open solutions on the desktop.

GE also offers a special solution starting from state of the art acquisition technologies such as Apollo DigitalX-ray, Multislice CT etc., critical for future implementationor digital imaging systems. We can provide end to endintegration from all these acquisition technologies withback-end information technologies for PACS.

The one element that distinguished GE's offering is ourstate of the art on Demand Architecture. This architectureenables customers to access information quickly at a PACS workstation on the fly from short-term storage systems. It sends images and reports anywhere within the network in less than 3-4seconds.

Other "Routine technology" offering try to place theinformation in advance on the local hard disk,so that the data is located on the appropriate workstation when theradiologist accesses the date. The imposes restriction onwhen and where they can access the information.

We have probably the best infrastructure among all imaging'and PACS comcpanies in customer support, applications and training. We have added projects management, applications and theremote diagnostics infrastructure. We can provide PACS offeringsglobally along with total support. The independent PACS providersare smaller companies which do not have such infrastructure to begin with.

How can Wipro GE deliver this value in IIS to our customers?
Wipro GE is adding tremendous system integrationcapabilitie for us in the South Asian market. PACSmanufacturing is not traditional manufacturing but moreintegratinal software and component scoring. Over the years, as wipro GE becomes a global product company,it will add greater value to sub-system through core softwaredevelopment.

What will be the impact of IIS on medicine itself?
It will be more evolutionary than revolutionaty. But theevolution is going to be very rapid as IT in general is movingmuch faster and its impact ca be seen in other industries. In all, there will be dramatic change in patient care.
