Axial images are obtained with T1-weighted, and fat-suppressed T2-weighted FSE sequences. If the fat suppression is inadequate in the axial plane, these images may require supplementation with a T2*-weighted GRE technique, either 2D or 3D. Axial images must extend from the distal radioulnar joint through the proximal metacarpals.
