Chapter 8: The Knee

8.4 - Examples of Pathology

The following examples demonstrate the complimentary nature of the techniques described above. The T1-weighted and proton density sequences are useful for examination of the detailed anatomy, while the T2-weighted sequences are very sensitive to fluid such as marrow edema. Figures 8.7 through 8.10 show common internal derangements of the knee, all clearly demonstrated with our protocol.

(A) Sagittal PD-weighted image showing a complete ACL tear (arrow). (B) The sagittal T2-weighted image from the same study shows with marrow contusions of the lateral femoral condyle and posterior lateral tibial plateau (arrows).

(A) Sagittal PD-weighted image showing a complete PCL tear (arrow). (B) The sagittal T2-weighted image from the same study shows with marrow contusion of the anterior tibial plateau (arrow).
Figure 8.9 (click on image for enlarged view)
(A) Sagittal PD-weighted FSE image showing a normal medial meniscus. (B) Tear to the anterior horn of the medial meniscus (arrow). The FSE technique demonstrates the tear clearly.
Figure 8.10 (click on image for enlarged view)
(A) Sagittal PD-weighted FSE showing a tear to the posterior horn of the medial meniscus (arrow). (B) Sagittal PD-weighted FSE of a different patient showing a tear to the posterior horn of the medial meniscus (arrow). The FSE technique demonstrates the tears clearly.
