Contrast Enhanced Imaging of the Carotid Arteries

Alfio K. Pennisi, M.D. Director of MRI, Chief Section Neuro Radiology South Jersey Radiology Associates Voorhees, NJ USA

"The following two cases demonstrate the ability of carotid MRA to diagnosis tandem lesions, due to it’s ability in most cases to evaluate the entire vascular tree, extending from the Aortic Arch to the Circle of Willis. Carotid MRA illustrates a non-invasive accurate evaluation of the carotid bifurcations in an out patient setting utilizing non nephrotoxic contrast." - Alfio K. Pennisi, M.D.

Overview: Clinical Case 1

The patient is a 69 year old male presented with symptoms of right upper extremity weakness two days prior to the Carotid MRA exam.

Image 1 shows that, bilaterally, the carotid bifurcations are normal and widely patent.
