A majority of surgeons agreed open surgery
is rapidly becoming the "old standard" in a
debate on this question at the 2010 Joint
Meeting of the Society of Vascular Surgery
and the European Society for Vascular Surgery.
Although two-thirds of aortic repair in Western Europe continue to be performed in open surgery procedures, adoption of minimally invasive endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) is expected to grow by 8 percent to reach over 18,300 cases by 2013, according to the Millennium Research Group.
Rapid advances in clinical experience and technology have increased the availability of devices for aortic repair while also decreasing costs, suggesting the trend to EVAR may accelerate beyond 2013.
