How Performance Solutions improved capital equipment utilisation by creating an MR dashboard at Shiekh Khalifa Medical Centre in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

“The ability to monitor the utilisation rate of our new MR equipments was a thought that we had for some time but did not know how to operationalise it in a way tailored to our environment. I knew about Six Sigma and it's industrial world applications, and recently learned that GEHC, one of our long-term partners, had successfully deployed it to the healthcare world in the US and Europe, through an initiative called Performance Solutions.

We informed GEHC about our vision, and they developed a solution articulated around empowerment of the operational team, total buy-in of all stakeholders, and through measurement processes, to develop a two level monthly dashboard. This dashboard combines instant visibility for the management of the workflow, and allows Operations to quickly identify the causes of variations and drive effective solutions using Six Sigma Methodology.

The General Authority of Health Services of Abu Dhabi intends to use this type of dashboard to establish internal benchmarks from now on".

Project objectives:

  • Use Six Sigma methodology to develop a dashboard based on MR patient processes with indicators to help control and improve MR room utilisation and productivity


What we found:

  • Well developed MR patient workflow process
  • Daily log sheet used by reception and MR technical teams
  • Alarm indicators (patient doesn’t come, rebooks or cancels) in the daily log sheet


Solutions proposed:

  • 2 level monthly dashboard with 12 metrics, chosen by the project team, to give full visibility of the workflow and provide immediate ability to identify the cause to the variation
