By Dr. Siân Phillips, Consultant Radiologist, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust, Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, Wales, United Kingdom.

Patient History

Patient presented with left side loin pain, renal colic, possibly caused by obstruction in the urinary tract. IVU with X-ray and VolumeRAD were performed.

Findings

The inital image at 15 minutes following intravenous contrast demonstrates delayed excretion on the left with a dense nephrogram (Fig 1). No calculus has been demonstrated on conventional digital imaging. The VolumeRAD examination (Fig 2) subsequently performed demonstrates a calculus not seen on standard views.

Conclusion

Dr. Siân Phillips
“This case clearly demonstrates the value of VolumeRAD rendering structures more conspicuous by removing the overlying tissue, improving the diagnostic value to the IVU procedure.”
