Chest apex lesion

Chest apex lesion

VolumeRAD revealed a large tumour that was hidden in the apex region and hard to detect on the X-ray images.

By Ass. Prof. Susanne Kheddache, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden

Patient history

60 year old woman with history of breast cancer surgery 20 years ago, smoker. Recent brain metastasis identified by CT. X-ray requested before radiation therapy of brain metastasis.
X-ray PA and X-ray lateral
X-ray PA: difficult to see the opacity in the apex region X-ray lateral

Findings

VolumeRAD shows a big apical dorsal opacity, left, close to the pleura, 4cm x 5cm. The appearance is not typical of metastasis, it is more suspicious of malignant tumor, possibly lung cancer.

Conclusion

Ass. Prof. Susanne Kheddache
“In this case VolumeRAD revealed a large tumor that was hidden in the apex region and hard to detect on the X-ray images. In some cases VolumeRAD gives a conclusive result, so that a CT examination is not necessary.
In addition, now we sometimes follow up unclear nodules with VolumeRAD instead of CT.
In the future I imagine that VolumeRAD will become our baseline for performing controls.”
