Medical care in the autonomous region of Extremadura, situated in the south west of Spain, has always been a challenge to the national healthcare service.

The region is rather large and sparsely populated. Patients have had to travel long distances for an appointment with a qualified medical expert.
In 2002, political circumstances allowed the local government to decide on a profound modernization of the healthcare service on a regional level in Extremadura.

After a short planning phase, the region implemented a digital image management system that is, with its scope and depth, one of the biggest installations in Europe.

State-of-the-art image distribution in the Extremadura
region for more than 1,400 doctors in 14 hospitals

All 14 hospitals in Extremadura store patient data, diagnoses and images on a server located in the center of the regional Health Service authority (SES) in Merida. Virtually within seconds, the SES disposes all medical information via an online portal to any doctor in the region.
