Benefits and results

  • Faster report turnaround time: from 3–4 days to same-day delivery
  • Faster report delivery to referring physicians, allowing earlier treatment and optimal handling of emergency patients.
  • Faster report delivery to patients, noticeably reducing their waiting time and comfort
  • Reduced administration costs through the use of network-based, frontend speech recognition.
  • Overall improved patient care

What has changed in the report creation process?

"We reallocated our resources right from the start because we decided to work with frontend speech recognition. When we didn’t have speech recognition, a radiologist would dictate his or her reports and a transcriptionist would type it up. Now transcriptionists can take on other tasks, as the radiologists take control over the whole report creation process. They dictate their reports using a Philips SpeechMike, correct the recognised texts and finalise their own reports."

Has the turnaround time for reports improved?

"Patients and referring physicians receive their reports much faster after an exam. Without digital dictation and speech recognition, a report would typically be finalised after three or four days. Today, patients usually get the results on the day after the exam. In urgent cases, they will receive the report right after the exam. We are now using our resources in another way – for the benefit of the patient."

How long does it take for new physicians to get used to the system?

"When our contact person at GE said that the Initial Training would take no more than half an hour I found that hard to believe but it turned out to be true. Whenever we have a new doctor coming to work with us permanently, my assistant or I will give them a half-hour training with the system. New words will then be added over the next few weeks in order to create a personal profile."

What is your recommendation for other hospitals looking at speech recognition?

"Just go for it! It’s not difficult to use at all and the results will show quickly."
