Omar Ishrak, Vice President and General Manager, Global Ultrasound and Bone Mineral Densitometry
Hi. My name is Omar Ishrak and I’m responsible for the Ultrasound business for GE. I’m here to talk to you for a few minutes about the status of the ultrasound business at GE right now.
It’s an exciting time for ultrasound. Recently, we introduced the biggest breakthrough ever, that we’ve done in several years, and perhaps the biggest new product introduction in the ultrasound industry. This involved the introduction of two new products, the LOGIQ 9 and the LOGIQ 7. At the heart of this years breakthrough is a new architecture that we’ve developed for ultrasound products which is highly software intensive, geared around a customized ultrasound processor called TruScan. This architecture is different from anything that’s been done in ultrasound before. It’s essentially interfaced with the probes and the beam former, a customized processor which is scaleable, flexible, and upgradeable.
The components of this years product offering based on this architecture are four distinct points, which I’ll share with you in the next few seconds.
First, there’s TruAccess. TruAccess is the usage of raw data. Raw data is image data that is acquired before any image manipulation happens in the ultrasound scanner. This raw data is stored in every scanner and is used for subsequent image manipulation after the exam is completed or after a study is completed.
In addition to TruScan we have a technology called SmartScan which allows better exam productivity through use of things like automatic optimization of images, to the use of 3D in a very useable and easy fashion which we expect will extend the utility of 3D and enhance the ease of usage of ultrasound.
The third component of this years technology release is ComfortScan which is geared around the ease with which a sonographer or user can use an ultrasound machine.
And finally and perhaps most importantly, we have CodeScan, which is our focus on image quality in ultrasound through which we will provide better images, better usage of codes which is a proprietary GE technique.
And finally, perhaps another big significant reason to be excited about where we stand in ultrasound is a recent acquisition that we did. We acquired a company called KRETZ who is a leader in 3D and 4D ultrasound, which is real time 3 dimensional imaging.
So there’s a lot of things to be excited about in ultrasound. We’re excited about our future. We’re a company who have grown within this ultrasound business over the last several years and we look forward to several more years of continued growth in this exciting market, expecting to make a difference to the ultrasound users world wide. Thank you.
