Ground-breaking partnership leveraging world-class technology and management techniques to meet healthcare challenges of the future
New York, NY and Waukesha, Wis.– NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and GE Medical Systems announced today the signing of a historic multi-year, several hundred million dollar partnership. GE Medical Systems will provide NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital with a formula for world-class technology, services and management techniques.
“We recognize that to remain at the forefront of a continuously evolving healthcare delivery environment, we must anticipate and respond to changes before they happen,” stated Dr. Herbert Pardes, president and chief executive officer of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. “To assist us in meeting these changes, we are adopting the proven technology, tools and strategies of GE Medical Systems which are needed to build upon our strong foundation, and position the organization for growth, while improving the quality of patient care.”
“GE Medical Systems is honored to partner with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in its quest to reach ‘performance excellence’,” said Joseph Hogan, president and CEO of GE Medical Systems. “Patients will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this relationship
through access to the latest technology, best healthcare services and world class clinicians using improved processes. Together, our respective organizations will create a healthcare model for the future.”
An integral aspect of the engagement will have NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital adopting GE’s acclaimed management development and performance improvement methods. This will help build upon NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s strong leadership team and employee base to deliver superior patient care well into the future. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital will implement leading edge tools for improving management, service quality and operational effectiveness. Employees will be trained in GE’s quality and process improvement programs. This balanced approach is comprised of Six Sigma statistical methodologies, change-management strategies (Change Acceleration Process) and team-based problem solving techniques (Work-Out™).
“We’ve made serious commitments to creating an environment of excellence not only for our patients, but also for our clinicians and employees,” said Dr. Michael Berman, executive vice president and hospital director of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. “By continually offering the most skilled caregivers, trained in the best practices, we will be able to offer optimal patient care and further expand our capabilities as a leading academic medical center.“
“The partnership will position the hospital to meet future competitive challenges in the healthcare delivery marketplace. The Hospital expects to save in excess of $100 million within the next five years by adopting GE’s strategies,” said Dr. Berman.
In addition to the performance improvement methodologies, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital will be among the first nationally to have access to cutting edge technologies such as Flat Panel Digital Mammography, Digital X-Ray, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and other imaging technologies as they become available.
“We believe that GE is the right partner at the right time to enable the Hospital to remain fiscally sound and continue its movement toward delivery of the best patient care in our region and in the nation,” said John J. Mack, chairman of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Board of Trustees. “Through this comprehensive technological leadership partnership with GE, we are taking a major step toward our ultimate goal of becoming one of the top five academic medical centers in the country, and helping GE to further develop its technology leadership.”
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is widely renowned for clinical and academic excellence and was named the number 1 Hospital in New York by US News & World Report, “America’s Best Hospitals” Honor Roll for the third year in a row (2001-2003) and also ranked #11 in the United States. Also in 2003, an annual survey conducted by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. and published in America's Top Doctors, named more physicians from NewYork-Presbyterian than from any other hospital in the nation.
