GE Unveils Its Smallest, Lightest Mobile Heart Monitor for Accurate "On-the-Go" Observation

U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance received on small, unobtrusive device that records heart activity as patients go about their normal, daily routine

CHICAGO and MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Now patients can keep accurate readings of their heart activity with one of the smallest, lightest monitors available. GE has received Food and Drug Administration clearance for a new lightweight recording device that unobtrusively monitors patients' heart activity as they go about daily tasks at home and on the job.

The compact device, called SEER Light from GE Medical Systems Information Technologies weighs just 2.5 ounces (72 grams) and is about the size of a small stack of business cards. The monitor lets doctors see how a patient's heart responds during everyday activities like walking, exercising, working and sleeping. The patient wears the device for 24 hours; then the doctor can review a complete minute-by-minute record of the day's heart activity.

Digital technology ensures reliable, uninterrupted monitoring throughout the day, and provides an accurate record that helps the doctor make a correct diagnosis.

"Holter recorders are valuable tools for cardiologists because they provide a complete picture of how a patient's heart behaves during a typical day," says Mike Genau, vice president of Cardiology Systems for GE Medical Systems Information Technologies.

"The SEER Light is a breakthrough device because it is much smaller and lighter than most previous Holter recorders. Some patients resist wearing a recorder that is not only heavy and uncomfortable but is clearly visible and may generate questions from friends and associates. This new device is so small and light that patients can wear it under their clothing without other people seeing it and knowing they are using it."

The SEER Light also includes a handheld controller on which the doctor can easily enter the patient's demographic information so that it becomes part of the record. An LCD display lets doctors quickly and easily verify that the device is receiving a clear signal of heart activity from the leads attached to the patient.

"The SEER Light recorder significantly advances our Holter product line, providing a new lighter weight solution to meet the needs of physicians and heart patients," says Genau. "The SEER Light and the state-of-the-art MARS analysis system form a powerful combination that helps clinicians access the most accurate information possible to support better patient care. The data and final reports generated by the SEER Light and the MARS are seamlessly integrated with GE’s MUSE cardiovascular information system for accurate patient information at the clinicians fingertips," adds Genau.
