GE Medical Systems Unveils New CT Scanner and Advanced Applications at the American College of Cardiology Meeting
EBT and LightSpeed Technologies Provide Clinicians with CT Scanners for Every Cardiac Need
ATLANTA -- GE Medical Systems, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), announced today several revolutionary CT products for cardiac imaging at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) annual meeting in Atlanta.
The newly acquired Electron Beam Tomography (EBT) C300 scanner premieres at the ACC meeting. In addition, the CardIQ applications provide powerful new cardiac imaging and analysis capabilities. These technologies together with GE’s LightSpeed CT scanners enhance GE’s leadership in noninvasive cardiac imaging.
"With EBT and the LightSpeed CT, GE offers clinicians comprehensive cardiac solutions," said Sholom Ackelsberg, Manager, Global CT Advanced Products. "Physicians now have an entire suite of technologies, advanced applications and clinical flexibility to provide the best patient care possible.”
EBT C300's new cardiac imaging capabilities include Multi-Phase™ Electron Beam Angiography,™ cardiac perfusion and wall motion. With no mechanical motion, it provides the fastest scan speeds available. Additionally, the EBT C300 is useful for lung and colon examinations. A new, intuitive graphical interface provides point-and-click operation.
“The perfusion and wall motion package on GE’s EBT system provides powerful new capabilities,” explained Dr. Paolo Raggi, MD, a cardiologist at Tulane University School of Medicine. “I can image eight centimeters of the heart, every heart beat, without moving the patient, and have a complete perfusion study done in 20 seconds.”
The LightSpeed Ultra, the world’s first 8-slice CT scanner, represents GE’s leadership in multi-slice cardiovascular CT and whole-body imaging. The LightSpeed 16-slice CT scanner, which received FDA clearance last year, will be available later this year and will become the newest member of the LightSpeed CT family.
“The LightSpeed Ultra used in conjunction with CardIQ Function and CardIQ Analysis allows me to examine coronary arteries and analyze cardiac wall motion with a single contrast injection,” explained Raye Bellinger, MD, FAAC, a cardiologist with Sacramento Heart and Vascular Medical Associates. “LightSpeed Ultra offers the cardiac applications that I need, while giving my practice the flexibility to perform whole-body scans for other diagnostic examinations.”
GE has installed more than 2,000 LightSpeed scanners around the world with more than 1,000 of the systems currently being used for cardiac studies.
The LightSpeed Ultra, EBT C300 scanner, and CardIQ applications will be on display at this year’s ACC meeting in Atlanta from March 17-19.
