Cardiology Business of GE Medical Systems Ultrasound Posts 30% Sales Increase

Growth fueled by new operating platform featured on two new products

ATLANTA -- Fueled by the introduction of a new operating platform and two new products, the Cardiovascular Ultrasound business of GE Medical Systems announced at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Annual Meeting that it delivered more than 30 percent growth in 2001. This marked the second straight year of over double-digit growth for GE’s Cardiovascular Ultrasound business globally.

In 2001, GE Medical introduced TruScan, a new operating platform that is the foundation for the new Vivid 7 and Vivid 3 products. TruScan architecture is a software-intensive, ultrasound-imaging operating platform that provides physicians with excellent computational power, image manipulation capability, workflow flexibility and product upgradeability.

“The customer response to our new cardiovascular ultrasound products is tremendous,” said Al Lojewski, Global Marketing Manager of GE Medical Systems’ Cardiovascular Ultrasound business. “Our customers are realizing the improvements in overall image quality, the advantage of quantitative assessment tools, and the benefits of raw data, all in an ergonomically-designed system.”

The Vivid 7 combines four new product advancements including:
  • TruData, a new 3D Beamforming technology that significantly improves image quality with breakthrough performance in 2D, color and Doppler imaging
  • Qscan, which helps physicians extract more definitive diagnostic information from cardiovascular images by bringing quantitative assessment tools out of the research lab and into the routine clinical exam
  • TruAccess provides physicians total data management with true, raw data DICOM-networking capabilities and the ability to apply live scanning techniques to stored images
  • ComfortScan allows operators to personalize their workspace for maximum comfort during an ultrasound exam. Designed by ultrasound users for ultrasound users, the Vivid 7 features a floating keyboard that moves up and down and left and right.

“The Vivid 7 increases productivity considerably. By reading the images digitally, you can review all of the data quickly,” said James Schmitz, M.D., Director of Cardiovascular Services, New London Hospital, New London, New Hampshire. “We are able to produce our information in a dramatically shorter period of time.”

The Vivid 7 and Vivid 3 products are examples of GE’s commitment to introducing new technologies annually.

“Not only were we looking to purchase a quality piece of equipment, we wanted to build a partnership with a solid company. We feel that we have done both by choosing GE Medical Systems,” said Renee L. Bess, RDCS, RVT, Cardiology Research Associate, St. John’s Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. St. John’s recently installed a Vivid 7 system.
