GE Introduces First-Ever Integrated Medical Image And Information System For Healthcare Providers

GE Centricity™ Information System Significantly Enhances Radiologist Productivity and Enables More Focus on Patient Safety

CHICAGO - For the first time ever, radiologists can view comprehensive information about a patient’s health history electronically with instant access to images and medical information together in a single workstation. This healthcare advancement will significantly help radiologists increase their productivity and deliver more confident care for patients.

The advanced integrated information system, called GE Centricity™ Information Systems, is available from GE Medical Systems Information Technologies and integrates radiology information together with information from other care areas of hospitals to provide radiologists with medical images and patient information together in a single desktop application.

Today, radiologists commonly interact with several different interfaces from several different companies before making a final patient decision, which can add up to thousands of hours in lost productivity. Now, GE Centricity offers a single integrated system with one user interface that captures an entire view of the patient’s experience, speeding the decision-making time for patients.

For example, at the touch of a button, radiologists now can see when a patient exam is scheduled, how long the patient waited, what information was acquired, patient allergies, technologist notes, and more.

With GE Centricity, Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) is also combined with Radiology Information Systems (RIS), so disparate patient information is integrated into one database and a single desktop application.

"GE Centricity takes productivity in radiology departments to a new level, replacing redundant workstations, databases and multiple user interfaces. Now a full range of patient information is securely at the fingertips of radiologists, as the complete digitization of the process creates a paperless workflow. It really represents the greatest advancement in productivity since PACS itself," said Vishal Wanchoo, vice president of Radiology Systems with GE Medical Systems Information Technologies.

"PACS alone will typically reduce report turnaround by as much as half and film usage by up to 80 percent within six months of implementation," Wanchoo adds. “But even then, productivity is held back by the need to reference separate PACS and RIS systems several times for just one patient. By integrating the systems, a department can expect to gain thousands of hours in productivity in one year.”

This complete filmless solution is currently being adopted by St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson, Ms., and according to Keith Van Camp, vice president of information systems at St. Dominic’s, radiology services to referring physicians are expected to be provided faster than ever before with delivery of images and reports made available anywhere, anyplace, and anytime.

“Making available patient images and information readily to clinicians whenever and wherever they need them is the vision for St. Dominics, which is why we chose GE Centricity,” said Van Camp. “GE has established itself as a strong leader in providing advanced clinical systems for healthcare providers and this filmless solution is just another example of how the company’s vision is aligned with the needs of healthcare providers.

“For radiologists, the system allows secure log on at any time, from inside or outside the hospital, so they can view a complete patient profile, including medical history, online orders, prior reports, related exams, demographics, technologists’ notes, the reason for the patient's visit, and information from the referring physician. It’s everything needed to make a sound decision on the patient's behalf,” said Van Camp.

“GE Centricity includes an integrated PACS/RIS solution that helps radiology departments fundamentally optimize workflow via one user interface, so radiologists can see an entire view of the patient’s experience and provide the most informed decision,” said Lester Diamond, senior vice president at St. Dominic’s. “GE Centricity is essential in our imaging department as we strive annually to meet increases in the number of procedures performed, while maintaining our high quality expectations in a fiscally responsible manner.”

The technology is even available through GE’s Application Service Provider (ASP) model, called GE Centricity™ ASP. GE Centricity has also integrated voice recognition to streamline reporting workflow.

GE demonstrated the breakthrough technology for the first time at the Radiological Society of North America conference in Chicago, Nov. 25-29.
