GE Medical Systems Unveils New Business Vision to Address Changing Customer Needs

Dedicated Services Business, New Technology Organization and IT Focus to Help Healthcare Providers Improve Quality of Care

WAUKESHA, Wis.- GE Medical Systems announced today a new vision and strategy for its $8 billion healthcare business. The move creates three dedicated organizations focusing on Services, Technology and Information Technology. This organizational structure is designed to adapt to the unique and constantly changing needs of healthcare providers around the world.

The first dedicated organization, called GE Medical Systems Healthcare Services, will be focused on the clinical, operational and financial needs of healthcare. It will provide the industry’s most comprehensive services offering including Asset Services, Business Services, Clinical Services, IT Services and Financial Services. GE Medical Systems Healthcare Services is expected to be the fastest growing segment of GE Medical Systems and will represent more than 50 percent of the company’s total revenue by 2003.

“By creating GE Medical Systems Healthcare Services we have placed a focus on the unique needs of healthcare in the areas of quality improvement, performance enhancement and cost control,” said Joe Hogan, President & CEO of GE Medical Systems. “This new business is the perfect complement to our strengths in medical imaging and information technology and gives our customers access to integrated solutions to meet their clinical and business needs.”

According to the Healthcare Advisory Board’s report “State of the Union 2001: Market Reform and Innovation at the Frontier,” hospitals will continue to see an increase in demand for inpatient care services, reversing a trend of declining admissions dating back to the early 1990’s. At the same time, hospitals are struggling with how to recruit and retain caregivers to staff for the increased number of beds.

“Staff shortages, increased patient demand and continued cost pressures have placed the global healthcare industry under enormous strain,” said Paul Mirabella, President and CEO of GE Medical Systems Healthcare Services. “Physicians and hospital administrators have asked us to apply our strengths in Six Sigma, business management and technology to help them meet the challenges they face everyday. GE Medical Systems Healthcare Services exists to do just that.”

GE Medical Systems is also expanding its medical imaging business to bolster product development and distribution across medical imaging modalities. GE Medical Systems has revolutionized healthcare with products like the Innova™ 2000 all-digital cath lab, the Discovery™ LS hybrid PET/CT scanner, the Senographe® 2000D full field digital mammography system and the Signa TwinSpeed™ dual gradient MR system.

“Continued excellence in our core technology business will always be part of our organizational fabric,” according to Hogan. “GE Medical Systems’ ability to bring new technology to market faster than other companies has helped our customers become leaders in the communities they serve.”

According to a report prepared by The Institute for the Future entitled ”Health and Health care 2010: The Forecast, The Challenge,” baby boomers will impact health care in ways never seen before. They will place more demands on hospitals and clinics not only for their own needs, but also for the needs of their children and parents. At the same time, healthcare is expected to be revolutionized by advancements in information technologies that will help improve patient flow, information sharing and administrative services.

The third piece of GE Medical Systems’ organizational foundation was unveiled in September 2000, when it introduced GE Medical Systems Information Technologies. This business unit was created to help healthcare providers better manage clinical information and images, improve operational performance and streamline patient care. This $1.2 billion company provides the industry’s broadest range of cardiology, radiology, patient monitoring and clinical information systems and performance management services.

“Technological excellence, a new focus on healthcare services and strong capabilities in information technology will shape the future of GE Medical Systems,” stated Hogan. “It’s important for every employee at Medical Systems to be focused and organized around the diverse needs of our customers. These changes demonstrate our continued commitment to helping customers succeed.”

Another trend leading to complications in the delivery of healthcare is the continued industry consolidation and privatization of hospitals and healthcare systems. This has more customers searching for integrated solutions that help reduce the duplication of services and improve information sharing and operational efficiency.

North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System includes 18 acute care hospitals across Long Island and Staten Island in New York with 5,671 beds, 29,000 employees and 3.6 million patient visits each year.

“GE Medical Systems has proven its ability to combine the right technology and services to create solutions that deliver results,” according to Michael Dowling, President and CEO of North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “As an integrated health system, we need to work with a partner who can help us continue to increase efficiencies while maintaining clinical excellence. GE Medical Systems helped us implement Six Sigma to drive process improvement and has been instrumental in helping us create an environment for learning and innovation.”

GE Medical Systems is actively working with hundreds of customers around the world to develop integrated solutions that address technology, services and IT needs.

“GE Medical Systems has once again demonstrated that it’s not just about building the hi-tech box,” said Dorman Followwill, Vice President of Healthcare at Frost & Sullivan, an international marketing consulting and training company. “In this day and age, healthcare providers need a company that manufactures breakthrough technology, offers creative financing solutions, provides maintenance and upgrades and then teaches customers how to get the most out of their investment. GE is positioned like no other company to offer a comprehensive portfolio of products, services and solutions.”
