Biographies


Dr. William R. Clarke
Executive Vice President and Chief Technology & Medical Officer
GE Healthcare

Bill Clarke was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Technology & Medical Officer of GE Healthcare in April 2004. In this role, Bill oversees technology development for GE Healthcare globally. Previously, Bill oversaw the Global Research, Development, Medical, and Regulatory functions as Executive Vice President of R&D, Amersham Health. He also is actively involved in a number of United States health policy issues.

Before joining Amersham in December 2000, Bill spent three years as Director of Biological Sciences at Glaxo Wellcome U.K. with responsibility for pre-clinical disease-focused biological research. He also was Chair of the Glaxo Wellcome Global Imaging Strategy Committee, formulating corporate strategy and developing significant business and governmental partnerships.

Before joining the pharmaceutical industry, Bill held a number of academic positions, most recently as Associate Professor at the Department of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Bill received his AB in Chemistry, MSc in Physiology and Pharmacology, and MD from Duke University. He was also educated at the University of Washington School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Stockholm School of Economics.

Sandro M. De Poli
President GE Healthcare Italia

Sandro De Poli, 48, has been the President of GE Healthcare Italy since January 2005. Mr. De Poli began his career with Siemens in the electromedical business. In 1982, he joined General Electric Medical Systems as the marketing manager in Italy for breakthrough diagnostic imaging equipment.

In 1988, Mr. De Poli was promoted to European Marketing Manager for Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance, moving to the European headquarters of GE Medical Systems in London and then in Paris.

Mr. De Poli came back to Italy in 1993 as the Managing Director of the Italian business, in charge of commercial management, and later extended his management to the businesses in Turkey, Greece and Israel. In 1998, Mr. De Poli took up the responsibility of delivering Global Services to public and private healthcare organizations in those four countries.

Mr. De Poli was the European Vice President for commercial operations of the Services business, based in Paris, from 2000 to 2003 and in 2004, as General Manager, he led the commercial integration between GE Medical Systems and Amersham.

Mr. De Poli lives in Milan. He is married and has three sons.

Scott A. Dulchavsky, MD, PhD

Scott A. Dulchavsky MD PhD received his Undergraduate Degree in Physiology from Michigan State University and attended Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed an internship and surgical residency at Wayne State University in Detroit where he served as the Chief Administrative Resident. Dr Dulchavsky was selected as the Helen DuRoy Traveling Scholar, which allowed study at Duke University Medical School under Dr. David Sabiston and at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

He was an assistant professor of surgery at SUNY-Stonybrook and the director of surgical research before returning to Detroit. Dr. Dulchavsky was promoted to tenured professor of surgery at Wayne State University in 1998. He was an attending surgeon at the Detroit Medical Center, the Director of Surgical Intensive Care, and the Chief of Surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Dr. Dulchavsky currently serves as the Roy D. McClure Chairman of Surgery and the Surgeon in Chief at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

Dr Dulchavsky completed a PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics at Wayne State University where he investigated the use of gene therapy to improve wound healing in disease states. He has served as research mentor to over 20 post-doctoral fellows and is the principal investigator for NASA in the Bio-astronautics Division involves teaching ultrasound to the astronaut and cosmonaut crews of the International Space Station to use for medical emergencies. Dr. Dulchavsky is also funded by NASA to establish micro-invasive surgical techniques in zero gravity through the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, Smart Medical Systems Team.

Dr. Dulchavsky has been elected to numerous professional organizations and national positions including the Society of University Surgeons, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Central Surgical Society, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Clinical Surgery, and the American Surgical Association. He maintains an active role in local and national medical associations including the American College of Surgeons where he serves on the Committee on Trauma and as the Vice Chair, Technology and Research for the National Ultrasound Faculty.

Dr. Dulchavsky is currently a professor of surgery, molecular biology and genetics at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He has received numerous medical student and resident teaching awards and has served as mentor to numerous pre and post-graduates in surgery and medicine. He has written over 100 peer-reviewed articles, numerous text chapters and edited a textbook, “Reflections” on the writings of Alexander Walt.

Dr. Georg Huber
Chief medical officer of the German Olympia team
at the Olympic Winter games 2006 in Turin

Dr. Georg Huber is the chief team physician of the German Olympia team. He is specialized in occupational and sport medicine, working as an internist and expert for neural therapy.

As the assistant medical director at the University of Freiburg he is in charge of the rehabilitative and preventative sport medicine departments.

As the team doctor Dr. Huber participated in the Olympic Winter games of 2002 as well as at six Olympic Summer games, five Paralympics and three Deaflympics.

Since 1980 he is responsible for the equipment of the Olympia pharmacy. Until its closure Dr. Huber was member oft the anti-doping-commission for NOK and DSB. Afterwards he joined the newly founded National Anti-Doping- Agency (NADA) and is a member of the medicine & analytic taskforce.

As a medical supervisor Dr. Huber also accompanied many bike and motorbike events as for example the bike world championship and various bike tours. Since 1982 he is chief medical coordinator of the German bike league.

Since 1995 Dr. Huber is team doctor of the DSV- Ski alpine and DBS / NPC-Anti-Doping-commissary.

Doctor Giuseppe Massazza
Medical Doctor and specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology,

He was born in Turin on November 17th 1963, he has a degree in Medicine and Surgery and works as a specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology and in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the "Centro Traumatologico" of Turin belonging to the "II clinica Ortopedica" of the "Università degli Studi di Torino".

The scientific activity of Giuseppe Massazza has been relentless. His research interests include various areas of Sports Traumatology and Sports Medicine. He was appointed "Responsabile Ortopedico" at the "Studio Traumatologico Sestriere" to provide healthcare assistance to Teams and Athletes during the World Ski Championship of SESTRIERES in 1997.

From 2000 he has been working at collaborative projects for the XX Winter Olympic Games of Turin with the Local Emergency Department of the "Assessorato alla Sanità ed Assistenza" of the Regional Council of Piedmont.

From 2001 he has been Healthcare Director of the XX Winter Olympic Games and of the IX Winter Paraolympic Games of Turin.

He is a member of the Medical Committee of the International Olympic Committee, of the Medical Commitee of the "Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali" and Honorary Member of the "Federazione Medico Sportiva Italiana".

Michael H. Picard, MD, FACC

Michael H. Picard, MD, FACC, is the Director of the Clinical Echocardiography at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His clinical interests are in echocardiographic technologies and their applications in coronary artery disease, translational cardiology, heart failure and valvular heart disease. He directs the echocardiography core labs for the NHLBI sponsored SHOCK Trial and the Multicenter Registry of Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia.

He is the President-elect of the American Society of Echocardiography, a member of the board of directors of the National Board of Echocardiography, and serves on CMS' Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee.

Edward J. Ryan
Director, Sports Medicine
United States Olympic Committee

Ed Ryan was named as the Director of Sports Medicine for the United States Olympic Committee in July 2000. Ryan leads the USOC’s Sports Medicine Division in providing performance medical services to Olympic and Paralympic athletes and hopefuls.

Ryan joined the USOC staff in July 1985 as Head Athletic Trainer at the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, Michigan. Ryan moved to the Colorado Springs (Colorado) Olympic Training Center in 1989 and was promoted to Manager, Sports Medicine in 1991 and Senior Manager in 1999.

Prior to coming to the U.S. Olympic Committee, Ryan was Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Arizona, Tucson (1984-1985). Ryan also worked at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts as Assistant (1980-1983) and Head (1983-1984) Athletic Trainer.

Ryan is a member of the National, Colorado and Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers’ associations and the American College of Sports Medicine as well as the U.S. representative to Concerted Action in the Fight against Doping in Sport, a collaborative effort between the International Olympic Committee and the European Union Directorate. Ryan also serves on the Medical Education and Research Institute of Colorado board of directors and the Task Force on Physical Conditioning and Injury Prevention and Treatment for SEALS Operators, Special Operations/War Command, U.S. Navy.

Ryan is a graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and the University of Arizona, Tucson, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in exercise and sports sciences.

Ryan and his wife, Laura, reside in Colorado Springs.

Marnix Van Holsbeeck, MD

Marnix Van Holsbeeck MD received his received his Undergraduate Degree in Medical Sciences at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium and attended medical school at the same institution. He completed a residency in radiology, followed by a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at the University Hospitals in Gasthuisberg Belgium.

Dr. Van Holsbeeck was a lector at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium and a visiting assistant professor of radiology at the University of Michigan. He currently serves as the Director of the Section of Musculoskeletal Radiology in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He is also the Director of Radiology for the Bone and Joint Center in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital.

Dr Van Holsbeeck’s clinical and research interest is musculoskeletal ultrasound. He serves as primary diagnostic consultant for numerous professional sports teams including the Detroit Tigers, Redwings, and Lions. He has investigated the use of dynamic ultrasonography to detect sports hernia injuries and is the primary investigator for an ongoing, collaborative research project with the United States Olympic Committee and Henry Ford Hospital, which is evaluating the use of ultrasound to diagnose sports injuries in female hockey players. He is also a consultant for NASA in the Bio-astronautics division, which involves teaching ultrasound to the astronaut and cosmonaut crews of the International Space Station to use for medical emergencies. This work has been modified for use on the Earth where his team supports the on-site care of professional sports teams and United States Olympic Committee athletes as well as the Winter Olympic Games.

Dr. Van Holsbeeck has been elected to numerous professional organizations and national positions including the Radiologic Society of North America, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, International Skeletal Society, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Society, and the Society of Skeletal Radiologists.

Dr. Van Holsbeeck has received numerous teaching and professional awards including the Presidents Medal of the International Skeletal Society and the Belgian Radiologic Society. He serves as a reviewer for numerous medical journals and on the editorial board for Ultrasound Quarterly and the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound. He has written over 60 peer-reviewed articles, edited a leading textbook, “Musculoskeletal Ultrasound”.

Malissa J. Wood, MD

Instructor in Medicine, Harvard Medical School

Dr. Wood received her medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City . She completed both her Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston where she served as Chief Medical Resident.

Dr. Wood is a clinical cardiologist and staff physician in the Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Her research interests include better characterizing cardiac adaptations to changing loading conditions, particularly the cardiac response to strenuous exercise.

Dr. Wood is the principle investigator on a number of studies examining utilizing new echocardiographic techniques including tissue Doppler, strain and strain rate imaging to assess changes in systolic and diastolic function. Dr. Wood is also the co-investigator of a recently completed pilot trial assessing the benefit of Tai Chi in the treatment of heart failure patients.

She is the director of the core echocardiograpic laboratory in the multicenter large-scale trial of Tai Chi in heart failure, which will be starting in January 2005.
