Approved in Canada in 1986, METASTRON is an intravenously administered radioisotope that provides pain relief for patients suffering from bone pain due to metastatic cancer. The active agent, strontium-89, is a calcium analogue, and when injected into the bloodstream it targets areas where calcium uptake is seen, including growing bone cancers. Patients can often obtain pain relief for up to six months after a single injection of METASTRON, resulting in a significant improvement in quality of life. Much more in depth information can be found at our U.S. site located at: www.metastron.com METASTRON should be used with caution in patients with significantly compromised bone marrow from previous therapy or disease infiltration. Caution should also be used in patients with platelet counts below 60,000 or white blood cell counts below 2400. Some patients have reported a transient increase in bone pain lasting 36 to 72 hours following injection. This can usually be controlled with analgesics. |
